Karwa Chauth Vrat Katha
Queen Veeravati, sister of seven brothers, came to celebrate Karwa Chauth at her brothers’ place. She followed the entire ceremony religiously and observed the entire fasting ritual properly. But she got really hungry in the evening and her brother out of pity created an illusion of the moon so that her beloved sister could eat. The Queen mistook the mirror illusion for the moon as planned and broke her fast. Later at night, she got the news that the king had passed away.
Queen Veeravati rushed to her husband’s home and Lord Shiva and Mata Parvati appeared before her she fell into their feet and cried for forgiveness. The god promised the queen that her husband would be back but would remain sick for a long time.
As the queen went to the king’s room, he was alive but in a coma. Hundreds of pins have pierced him and she started removing those pins. As promised, she kept her next karwa Chauth fast diligently. At last, one final pin was left in the king’s body. One day queen went to the market to shop for the Karwa Chauth ceremony and in the meantime, a maid came and took out the final pin from the king’s body. The king got you and mistook the maid for her wife.
Later the king always found queen Veeravati singing “Roil ki goli hogyi goli ki roli hogyi….” They asked her the meaning of the song and the queen responded “queen became the maid and maid became the queen” She explained the entire story to the king and he apologized for the misunderstanding. Veeravati again became the queen.
The story of Satyavan and Savitri
In this tale, Lord Yama came to take Satyavan’s soul with him but his wife Savitri begged him to let him live. Yama refused and out of anger Savitri stopped eating and drinking and kept on following Yama. Yama was surprised and asked Savitri to ask for any other boon. Savitri demanded that she wanted to have kids with her husband.
Yama was left with no choice but to return the soul of Satyavan. Impressed by this Lord Yama said that if any married woman fasts for her husband on this day and prays to a banyan tree then her husband will have a long life.
