In the words of Martin Luther King, “To other countries, I may go as a tourist, but to India, I come as a pilgrim”. The land of India encompasses beautiful yet powerful shrines and places of pure devotion. The Himalayas have an air of mysterious charm to them, as it’s a popular belief among Indians that it’s home to saints who have been meditating for ages, even today.
India is the only country where the ancient culture of worshipping numerous gods has prevailed through the ages. Many different parts of India are known to worship different deities.
For all those out there looking to start their spiritual life-changing journey, here’s a list of places capable of transcending you into a different world. And it’s super easy to travel to any of these locations by booking a Volvo or sleeper bus.

Divine Destinations: Explore the Sacred Sites of Varanasi and Haridwar
Varanasi, the spiritual capital of India, is one of my favourite places to visit when I’m feeling down in life. It’s a beautiful city in Uttar Pradesh known for its famous Kashi Vishwanath Temple, and it is one of the holiest places in India. It’s one of the oldest cities in India, where people come to perform the last rites in the sacred Ganges.
This peaceful city has many tranquil ghats, where spending the early hours meditating and performing yoga and witnessing the Ganga aarti in the evening is an experience of a lifetime. Some notable places are Kashi Vishwanath Temple, Kal Bhairav Temple, Assi Ghat and Dashashwamedh Ghat.

Haridwar is a sublime beauty situated in Uttarakhand and is rightly called the ‘Gateway of Gods’. It is where the holy path of the Ganga first touches the Indo-Gangetic plains. This is another landmark place of pilgrimage in India and is a city brimming with culture and heritage. Ganga aarti at the Har ki Pauri ghat is a world-renowned ritual performed at the banks of the Ganges involving light and sound and is a sight to behold in the evenings.
Spiritual Centers: Unveil the Mystique of Belur Math in Kolkata
Belur Math is the founding math in the Ramakrishna Mission and was built by Swami Vivekananda in 1898. It is located in Howrah, just an hour and a half away from Kolkata. The state of West Bengal, Kolkata in particular, has been India’s cultural and literature capital.
Belur Math is not a religious place in India as it stands to unify all the diverse religions in India. One can realise the true essence of spirituality once you visit here. It is situated by the banks of the Hooghly River, and this place’s architecture and vibes are astounding.
Sacred Treks: Scale the Dhauladhar Range for Spiritual Enlightenment
For those who don’t believe in idol worship and a physical form of god but seek to experience the divine force amid the beauty of nature, this should be on your list of places to visit this year. The Dhauladhar range is heaven for those seeking spiritual enlightenment and wanting to feel the energy of creation.
This range forms part of the lesser Himalayan chain in Himachal Pradesh. The trek starts from Mcleodganj, a popular hill station in Himachal Pradesh, and extends towards Kangra Valley. The entire trek comprises alluring lakes and glaciers. One can take a sleeper bus from Delhi to Mcleodganj and unfold their best spiritual journey ahead.
Sufi Trail: Immerse Yourself in the Rich Sufi Heritage of Ajmer
Some places have a vibe to them. When you enter, your soul experiences a soothing calmness like never before. The Ajmer Sharif Dargah is one of those places for me. It’s one of India’s most sacred pilgrimage places for Muslims and people of every faith. It is a beautiful Sufi tomb built for saint Moinuddin Chisti by the Mughal king Humayun.
It’s best to visit this place during the early mornings as it gets stunning during the dawn when people gather around the marble floors below a banyan tree and get lost in the sufi prayers accompanied by a traditional harmonium being played.
The Sacred Ganges: Experiencing the Spiritual Essence in Allahabad (Prayagraj)
Prayagraj, more famously Allahabad, is one of India’s most ancient and sacred cities.
It is the land where the three famous rivers, Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswathi, confluence into each other and this place is popularly referred to as Triveni Sangam.
Located just 8 km from Prayagraj junction, this place is significant in Hindu mythology.

Due to their very different colours, Ganga and Yamuna, you can see the two rivers, but the Saraswathi River is invisible. This river is believed to have dried up some 4,000 years ago and has been mentioned in all our Vedas and Hindu scriptures.
Prayagraj also hosts the Kumbh Mela, a very auspicious festival according to Hindu mythology that has taken place at four different places since time unknown. Thus Prayagraj is one of the most important destinations in the tirth yatra for Hindus.
